4065 fortunes 2004

12 clear, 20" diameter, plexiglass domes filled with wrapped fortune cookies are placed in a circle on the gallery floor. A randomly generated date from the next 100 years is positioned next to each dome in white vinyl lettering. The dates are arranged in ascending order, in a clockwise direction.

As each date occurs, the dome to which it refers will be removed for the day. Visitors will be invited to remove a fortune cookie from the pile on the floor, within the circle of domes. Each individual fortune will be recorded as it is opened. In future, the empty dome will be displayed alongside the date which has passed, with a list of the opened fortunes detailed on the gallery wall. Over the next 92 years, this work will evolve from a circle of domes filled with 4065 sealed fortune cookies, to a circle of empty domes with a list of 4065 fortunes displayed on the gallery wall.

The first dome will be opened on 14th July, 2006. The last dome will be emptied on 20th January, 2096.
